Alfonso de Portago was an extremely versatile athlete. As well as racing for Ferrari, and participating twice at the Grand National as a gentleman jockey, Alfonso also competed in the two-man bobsleigh event at the 1956 Winter Olympics. He finished fourth, barely missing out on a medal.

In 1957, he finished third at the FIBT World Championships, finally claiming the bronze that eluded him the year before.
